A Sampling of Current Volunteer Opportunities with National Ministries

2008 Vacation Bible School projects list

Blitz Build Information Here
2008 Blitz Build, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, April 28-May 17, 2008

National Ministries is building more homes—yes, again!—on the Gulf Coast, and we need you.

National Ministries, on behalf of American Baptist Churches USA, will partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge in spring 2008 to build five homes for families that have permanently relocated to Baton Rouge, following displacement by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

But we need more than 300 volunteers to make this happen.

National Ministries needs individuals and groups interested in making a personal investment in rebuilding the Gulf Coast. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. Construction skills are not required, but any knowledge of or experience with construction is appreciated. Skilled laborers, such as electricians, plumbers and carpenters are especially critical, along with skilled individuals who can serve as house leaders.

Volunteers are responsible for transportation to and from Baton Rouge and the work site as well as a weekly fee of $100 for food and lodging.

More than 150 volunteers will be needed the first week, beginning Monday, April 28, when the five homes are blessed and the walls are raised. That week, work will focus on framing the exterior and interior walls, raising roof trusses and roof decking, and installing windows, doors and vinyl siding.

During the second week, beginning May 5, plans call for completion of subcontractor work, so volunteer opportunities will require those with specialized skills.

To finish vinyl siding, tape and float sheetrock, paint, and install trim work, cabinets and landscaping in the final week, beginning May 12, another 150-plus volunteers will be needed. The build will end on Saturday, May 17, with a dedication of each home.

If you have additional questions, contact Victoria Goff, national coordinator of Volunteer Ministries, at vgoff@abc-usa.org or 800-ABC-3USA, ext. 2449.

Summer 2008 Opportunity for Youth Groups

Now in its fourth year, the Alderson Ministerial Association of American Baptist Churches of West Virginia hosts summer work teams. In previous years, more than 250 youth and adults from all over the United States have come to Alderson, W.Va. to work on homes of low-income, disabled and senior families.

Work weeks begin June 2 and run through August 15 with teams needed July 14-August 15.
A Community Center with showers and kitchen facilities serves as “home base” for the week’s stay; all meals are provided. The week begins Monday morning and ends on Friday afternoon. Most groups arrive Sunday and leave Saturday morning. The cost per attendee is $225 for the week.

This is a great program for youth and college groups! For additional information please contact Victoria Goff, at vgoff@abc-usa.org or 800-ABC-3USA, ext. 2449

Through the Volunteers in Mission program, caring people can give freely of their valuable time and talents to respond to a call to ministry in the United States and Puerto Rico. Appointed volunteer missionary candidates must be at least 18 to serve for a week, several weeks, several months, or a year or more, with options for reappointment.

There are currently more than 100 mission settings available where individuals and groups can serve through Volunteers In Mission.

Thank you to all who have called, e-mailed and written asking how you can help alleviate the suffering that has resulted from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. American Baptists around the country are lending a hand to aid the survivors with ongoing recovery efforts. The denomination is also accepting monetary donations through our One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering. See the instruction under OGHS for Katrina relief donations. As we are able, we will advise you on how to give immediate assistance in the most effective ways. Thank you for your concern. Please continue to pray for those in need.
