Late in January, nine leaders representing eight colleges, universities and seminaries related to American Baptist Churches USA traveled to Valley Forge, Pa., for a day-long gathering where they explored ways to strengthen partnerships with National Ministries.

Rev. Dr. Aidsand F. Wright-Riggins III, National Ministries’ executive director — who convened the gathering — reminded the professors, deans and presidents that “none of us can do what we need to do by ourselves.”  Strengthening partnerships between National Ministries and American Baptist-related schools will, in turn, strengthen each organization individually as well, Wright-Riggins said.

During the day, the educational leaders and Wright-Riggins, along with National Ministries’ staff, discussed potential points of connection for working together to support each other’s ministries.

The educators pointed out that strategic alliances and synergies could be created in relation to the Children in Poverty Initiative, considering the contributions faculty in disciplines such as social work, education, health care, public policy, biblical and theological studies, and ethics can make to the initiative, which will focus on public education, health care, and family living wage issues.

Ten colleges and universities and 16 seminaries and theological schools across the United States and Puerto Rico are related to American Baptist Churches USA through National Ministries, which awarded $315,000 in scholarships and financial aid to American Baptist undergraduate, graduate and seminary students last year.

These higher education leaders participated in the National Ministries-sponsored gathering:

Dr. Linda Bryan, Associate Dean, Shaw University Divinity School, N.C.
Dr. Elouise Fraser, Dean, Palmer Theological School, Pa.
Mrs. LeAnn Pauley Heard, Vice President, Student Development, Judson College, Ill.
Dr. Mark Heim, Andover Newton Theological School, Mass.
Dr. John Kinney, Dean, Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, Vir.
Dr. Steve Markwood, President, Alderson-Broaddus College, W.Va.
Rev. Glenn Prince, Dean of Chapel, Benedict College, S.C.
Mr. Tom Ridington, Senior Vice President, Eastern University, Pa.
Dr. Wallace Charles Smith, President, Palmer Theological School, Pa.
