Mount Vernon Baptist Church, an American Baptist congregation in Scott Depot, W. Va., was featured in the Huntington Herald-Dispatch for its ministry assuring at-risk children in the Teays Valley get nutritious lunches during the week while school's out.
The government-funded program serves as an example of the difference American Baptists can make in the lives of Children in Poverty.
Through the Teays Valley Ministerial Association, the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, Mount Vernon's pastor who is also National Ministries' national coordinator for Evangelism, invited other area churches to join the effort, which resulted in close to a dozen congregations working together to help local children..
As Mount Vernon Baptist Church and its partners reach out to the children in their midst, their effort exemplifies the missional church in action.
American Baptist churches across the country are, indeed, transforming lives as the hands and feet of Christ.
