"Get involved!" That's the message of Alvin Lewis Jr., Executive Director of the United Christian Centers of Greater Sacramento in California. "We all have a relative, neighbor, or stranger in our community who needs to be introduced to Jesus Christ," Lewis says. "We can all begin right where we are."
In the greater Sacramento area, Lewis oversees the work of three Christian centers. The Robertson Adult Day Health Care Center assists seniors and those with disabilities to maintain their independence. The Lincoln Training Center focuses on helping individuals make the transition from welfare to work through vocational training programs. And the Broderick Christian Center provides transitional housing and a child development program to homeless families with minor children.
While each center serves people with very different needs, they have a shared purpose. "Our common thread is our desire to see people get the necessities of life," Lewis explains. "And when folks are ready, we want to help them make their lives better."
While each center has their own unit director to oversee daily operations, Lewis works to generate funding for all three through grants, proposals, and fund raising activities. "One of our biggest challenges is the diverse needs of those we serve," he says, "and maintaining our core Christian principles in the face of the social and political swings of funding sources is another significant challenge."
Lewis was drawn to full-time ministry through the examples of family members, including his father and grandfather who were both pastors. "Growing up in Detroit, I witnessed trials and tribulations regarding race relations," says Lewis. "My family was instrumental in teaching me that it is not just about one group's rights. Everyone is worthy of a chance."
Hearing about clients who have been given a chance and succeeded is the highlight of his job, according to Lewis. "As an administrator, my role is to help get the job done by providing the needed resources," he says. "I'm here to support the efforts of staff in offering services with dignity to those in need."
Alvin Lewis is married to Lisa Lewis. They are the parents of a son, Aaron.
