With a keen mind for project management and a heart for kids, David Sheldon is pleased to make a difference in the community where he's lived for more than 25 years. Shifting professional gears after many years in technology and engineering fields wasn't easy, but Sheldon felt nudged toward a new direction, and paid attention. "Sometimes the subtle messages are the important ones," he adds.
Sheldon's experience teaching science and technology to high school and college students prepared him for work with youth, The Place's sole concern. Here he has a hand in education in a positive and productive way and brings strategic business thinking to the work of his energetic and dedicated staff, building their service capacity.
Though problems can be hidden in Norwich's rural setting, Sheldon says homeless youth "couch surf from house-to-house because they have no place to live." Homeless people living under the bridge often are teens. Drug abuse is hidden when it's happening on a dirt road up in the woods instead of in the streets.
Norwich is a large enough city to have resources for the work, yet small enough for area agencies, schools and nonprofits to work in healthy collaboration. Sheldon affirms the importance of The Place's own strong foundation to form partnerships: "Our center has solid, best-in-class programs that help youth see value in themselves and build a sense of self that helps them grow and make good life choices."

HOME MISSION HIGHLIGHTS
- More youth ages 5 to 21 in the area and better identification of their needs mean increased demand for services.
- In summer 2005, for example, 160 youth applied for 80 places in a job readiness program.
- Service learning opportunities* involve 400 plus youth yearly.
- School-based service learning involves more than 2,000 youth who plan, organize, deliver and assess their own service projects, also celebrating accomplishments.
* Two other centers, Friendship House in Peoria, Ill., and Rankin Christian Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., are adopting The Place’s service learning program, called Leaders of Tomorrow. The Place trained staff members and offered coaching and mentoring to implement the programs at these other locations. Three more sites are ready to receive training, funded by the National Corporation for Service Learning.
