2009 Black Church Conference “Power Connection: A Call to Greater Works”
“Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father”(John 14:12 NRSV).
At the close of Jesus’ public ministries, he comforts the disciples and tells them that they must continue to believe in him and the one who sent him. Although he would no longer be with them physically, he assures them that their impact will be great—and even greater—as long as they continue to have faith in him and carry on the work he began.
The words of Jesus serve as a reminder for us that we, too, are called to have the kind of faith that compels us to do even greater works. In the midst of the challenges that face black communities—violence, education and healthcare disparities as well as inadequate housing—it is still our faith in God’s power through Jesus Christ that makes the difference.
Here are excerpts from the 2009 Black Church Conference, “Power Connection: A Call to Greater Works.” We, at American Baptist Home Mission Societies, pray that the presentations made at the conference will strengthen you and provide resources that help you to meet the present-day mission challenges with a resolve to do even “greater works”!
