News coverage of Katrina and Rita wanes, but the hurricanes’ effect on thousands of lives in the United States has not. American Baptists continue to respond in the name of Christ through direct ministry and financial gifts.
Giving by American Baptists is nearing $3 million. Many of these funds, given through One Great Hour of Sharing, have been distributed to American Baptist regions to support relief, rebuilding and relocation projects that they have undertaken.
Chris Campbell chronicles her experience with, “Reclaim Pass Christian,” the town recovery project launched by ABC of Indiana and Kentucky. Stories from the original collection on this Katrina page are archived here. Please consider using any of these as resources for your own ministries.
In this season as we celebrate the coming of the Christ child, Jesus—born into a family on a journey and far from home—let us continue our compassion for the families affected by these disasters and seek ways to act on behalf of children in impoverished circumstances, made especially vulnerable by such events.
