Hurricane Katrina Response

Ways to Help with Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

Advocacy
  • Advocate on behalf of poor people to change social and economic policies that leave many vulnerable to disaster and oppression. Write or call local, state and federal governmental agencies. Join the National Ministries Faith in Action network; contact National Ministries' legislative advocate at Curtis.RamseyLucas@abc-usa.org for more information.
  • Encourage congregations and individuals to think about the portrayal by national and local media of the people affected by the hurricane. Advocate for fair and balanced representation of survivors.
  • Advocate with National Ministries to rebuild social safety nets for the poor. Plan to actively encourage participation in the Children in Poverty initiative affirmed by American Baptists this year. Louisiana and Mississippi consistently have been noted as having the most children in poverty in the nation.
