Hurricane Katrina Response

Ways to Help with Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

Communication and Spiritual Encouragement
  • Pray unceasingly for the victims and those trying to serve them. Please encourage prayer vigils in congregations, families and among friends. The National Ministries and American Baptist Churches USA Web sites have prayers posted.
  • Report local and regional relief efforts, experiences and stories to National Ministries for sharing through the Web or print media to inform, inspire and coordinate with the wider American Baptist family.
  • Link regional Web pages to the National Ministries Katrina Response site at www.nationalministries.org/katrina. Encourage congregations to create a link from their Web sites to the Katrina page.
  • Collect Bibles, hymnals, devotionals and other resources for spiritual encouragement of survivors and as resources for chaplains and others providing pastoral care to those in need.
  • Appoint or commission and financially support people to represent your region or the wider American Baptist presence in evacuation centers or communities affected by the hurricane.
  • Use local and national resources to help people deal with conflict stemming from the trauma of this experience. Contact the coordinator for intercultural ministries and reconciliation at Dwight.Lundgren@abc-usa.org for information.
