Youth Reflections
The youth were asked which parts of the trip they most enjoyed learning from. The gave
a variety of responses:
- seeing poverty; in comparison, we have so much...how do we not take this for granted?
- working together as a group and seeing the difference we could make
- working to help a community
- the work we accomplished; seeing the progress of the work of many hands
- the Spirit of our group; we really enjoyed working together
- learning about the area around us and it's history
- learning from the tragedy of Emmett Till
- seeing the sights and the museums; it leaves one speechless
- visiting an energetic church (ABC) that was ALIVE and responsive
- visiting the site of a future Neighborhood Center; seeing a church pouring its energy and resources into its community
- learning the importance of share-cropping in Mississippi
- "I feel like I've come home." (from one of the youth with ancestral roots in the area)
- new experiences
- great food
- seeing where a sweet potato comes from and how it grows
- learning how a sweet potato can help sustain a community
- hearing the stories of Ms. Naomi Wiggins; she was a soldier, a true pioneer
- talking with the locals; people were so nice and friendly
- meeting mayor Johnny Thomas; learning how he tries to make a difference
- hanging out with the Mississippi youth, fellowshipping and sharing gifts.
